About Role:

VFS is seeking a well-organized self-starter for a full-time position as a Deputy Data Director. Under the supervision of the Data Director, the Deputy Data Director supports and assists in creating the client’s campaign strategy and directs voter contact programs within VFS’s portfolio. We seek a service-oriented individual with technical and political skills for this work. We are also looking for someone who has both strong skills in executing best practices in the progressive data and analytics space as well supporting team members in building skills in these areas. This position is ideal for someone with a creative, analytical mindset and a deep understanding of the sorts of data used and generated by political field campaigns.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • ​Supporting the data and analytics team in implementing VFS’s client goals

  • Taking a leading role in VFS’s creation of field campaign, organizing strategy and team benchmarks for success

  • Overseeing the drafting and use of training materials on VAN and other campaign data tools and systems including - leading in-person and remote trainings and training team members to deliver those trainings

  • Helping to administer VAN and other campaign data tools, including establishing protocols for troubleshooting problems

  • Managing a full-time Data Specialist tasked with supporting the Deputy Data Director and the Data Director in fulfilling the data and analytics team’s duties

  • Working with partner organizations using the voter file and other technologies to support, enhance, and execute programs; this includes taking a leadership role when working with partners in employing data tools for program implementation, applying best practices, and converting technical data to actionable issue advocacy and electoral campaign recommendations

  • Overseeing the planning, design and maintenance of data visualization tools 

  • Managing other data projects to help deliver on the data and analytics team’s goals to an exceptionally high standard

  • This is an in-person position

Qualifications:

​

Required:

  • 3+ cycles political campaign or political organizing experience with field organizing and large-scale canvassing; at least one cycle on a statewide or multi-state campaign

  • 2+ cycles managing data for large campaign field operations 

  • Experience working with underrepresented and/or historically marginalized communities, preferably in political or organizing settings

  • Experience with managing early- to mid-career level staff; strong supervision skills

  • Strong leadership skills, including the ability to set an example of dedicated professionalism for other team members in high-stress situations

  • Demonstrated ability to manage a high volume of information with impeccable attention to detail in a fast-paced environment

  • Strong sense of ownership and resilience concerning planning, finding alternative paths when needed, and bouncing back from setbacks 

  • Experience using data to inform plans and programs, preferably having done this in leadership and/or management roles in the past

  • Experience designing and informing data tools necessary for successful execution of field campaigns, such as turf trackers and progress to goal reports

  • Demonstrated ability to manage several tasks / projects concurrently, prioritizing work effectively

  • Effective communication skills

  • Must be comfortable working with diverse stakeholders in one-on-one meetings and group settings

  • Must be a self-starter willing to work long, irregular campaign-style hours and to travel as needed, especially during campaign season

  • Experience conducting both one-on-one and group trainings and/or developing training materials for end users

 

SPECIFIC TECHNICAL SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Strong VAN and other database skills- experience administering these tools and training on their use 

  • Advanced Google Sheets and/or Excel skills to create reports and analyze data using charts and formulas

  • Strong experience with SQL, including with both window functions and common table expressions; experience specifically with using SQL to manipulate and use data generated by common campaign data tools such as in VAN’s back end is preferred

  • Experience in using data visualization tools to explain a campaign’s past performance, its trajectory, and the context in which it is operating; specifically with tools such as Looker Studio (formerly called Google Data Studio), Tableau, Sisense’s Periscope, or visualization in R or Python

ADDITIONAL PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • ​Knowledge of and experience with Arizona’s political landscape and electorate including diversity of BIPOC constituency and their unique country of origin 

  • Experience with mapping tools such as QGIS or Maptitude

  • Experience with creating target voter universes

  • Experience with precinct prioritization in a field campaign context
